How far is 10,000 steps, really?
It depends on stride. Enter yours and the step count stops being a slogan and becomes a distance.

Stride length is the whole calculation
Distance equals steps multiplied by stride length. A stride of 70 centimetres gives about 7 kilometres for 10,000 steps; a shorter stride gives less. Stride varies with height, speed and terrain, so use a measured value rather than a default where possible.
The calorie figure uses roughly 0.5 kilocalories per kilogram per kilometre walked. It is an estimate: pace, incline, fitness and body composition all change the real number.
Measure your stride once
Walk ten strides at your normal pace, measure the distance, and divide by ten. That single measurement makes every future step count meaningful, and it takes less than a minute.
Frequently asked questions
Is 10,000 steps a scientific target?
It originated as a marketing figure. Health benefits appear at lower counts too; the useful target is the one you will sustain.
Does running change the conversion?
Yes. Running stride is longer, and the calorie rate per kilometre is higher. This calculator is calibrated for walking.
Why is my phone's distance different?
Phones use GPS, accelerometer estimates or a height-based stride default. A measured stride is usually closer to reality.
Can I use centimetres and kilograms?
Yes. The fields are metric; convert feet to centimetres and pounds to kilograms first.
